FAST exam for early recognition
At left is an example of the outstanding image quality from the FAZONE CB when used in the Point of Care (POC) environment for clinical assessment. Information such as the absence or presence of gallstones, or free fluid inside the abdomen (FAST exam), is crucial in determining the triage path for patients who present to the Emergency Department with either unexplained abdominal pain or blunt trauma.
“FAST” is an acronym for Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma and has become synonymous with bedside ultrasound in trauma. During the last decade, the most commonly studied use of the FAST exam and most of the trauma ultrasound research was performed on patients with blunt abdominal injuries. Intra-peritoneal bleeding after blunt trauma is common. It is usually the result of a spleen or liver injury and difficult to diagnose on physical exam. The FAST exam is an ideal initial screening modality for early recognition of intra-peritoneal blood since it is rapid, safe, and sensitive and can be repeated if the patient’s status changes.
The image below is an example of vascular imagery from the FAZONE CB, representing the fine detail of venous anatomy such as a vein valve in the leg vessel, but also, the outstanding capabilities of FAZONE CB’s Color Doppler application for quick assessment and evaluation of venous structures inside the leg. Eighty million Americans suffer from some form of venous disorder, and ultrasound is a quick and easy way to see the anatomy and check the flow characteristics of veins in order to prescribe and guide appropriate treatment.
